Why Shower Glass Can’t Always Be Restored

Over time, shower glass can become stained or damaged beyond repair—and it’s not just about being “dirty.” Here’s what really happens:

1. The Protective Coating Wears Away

Most shower glass panels are treated with a protective coating when they’re made. This coating helps repel water, soap, and grime. But with constant exposure to heat, moisture, and harsh cleaners, this layer wears off.

Once that happens, the glass becomes porous, meaning it starts absorbing minerals, soap scum, and oils—rather than repelling them. This creates deep staining that’s no longer sitting on the surface but has actually soaked into the glass.

2. SHYN Paste: Your Last Line of Defence

The SHYN Paste works by gently breaking into hard surface marks—like calcium build-up or soap scum that’s baked onto the top layer. It’s powerful but still gentle enough not to damage the surface.

But if you’ve tried the paste and other products, and the glass still looks murky, patchy, or frosted, that means the damage is below the surface—it’s no longer a cleaning issue.

3. When It’s Time to Replace

If the glass is no longer responding to any of the SHYN products (paste, degreaser, etc.), it’s a sign the surface has been etched or permanently stained. This is sometimes referred to as “glass cancer.” At that stage, replacement is the only option to restore full clarity.
