DOs for Cleaning Wool
-
Read the label first: Always check for specific care instructions like “dry clean only” or “machine washable wool.”
-
Use lukewarm or cold water: Heat can cause wool to shrink or felt.
-
Use wool-safe detergent: Look for pH-neutral, enzyme-free detergents designed for wool (e.g., Woolmark-approved).
-
Hand wash gently: Swirl or press lightly in water—never scrub or rub.
-
Use the gentle or wool cycle in the machine: Only if the label says it's safe to machine wash.
-
Place in a mesh laundry bag: If machine washing, this reduces friction and damage.
-
Rinse thoroughly: Make sure all detergent is out to avoid residue or stiffness.
-
Dry flat: Lay the item on a clean, dry towel and reshape it as it dries.
-
Store properly: Fold and store wool in a cool, dry place—ideally with cedar to deter moths.
❌ DON’Ts for Cleaning Wool
-
Don’t use hot water: It can shrink and felt wool permanently.
-
Don’t use regular detergent or bleach: These are too harsh and will damage the fibres.
-
Don’t wring or twist wool: This stretches and distorts the shape.
-
Don’t tumble dry: Wool should always air dry to prevent shrinkage and felting.
-
Don’t hang wet wool garments: They will stretch out of shape.
-
Don’t ignore stains: Spot-treat gently before washing so they don’t set.
-
Don’t leave soaking too long: 10–20 minutes max—longer can weaken the fibres.
